An interesting read, I enjoyed that and great to see efforts to report on the "state of deso" 💖
Regarding the blue check: interesting analyses, but I do wonder if there's a degree of confirmation and/or survivorship bias in interpreting the results...
Many of those with the blue check are longstanding OG or higher-profile accounts - and so, this would also skew the hot feed towards your conclusions: as those are the accounts that are more likely to have built up a network of engaged followers.
Therefore, is it the check itself or simply that users that are more likely to have a check will also be more likely to reach the feed?
(I don't know - just raising it as a question/observation)
Personally, I think there are two problems:
✅ Verification (due to the financial association); a high-risk venture for any node operator to take on;
🔥 Hot Feed Algo; the bigger problem IMHO. I don't know if many are aware of the (heavy) skew by coin-price? If, say, Nader or Highkey engages on your post it's worth lots and lots of typical community members doing so... are they, or is their interest, worth less?
The skew by coin-price would also explain why topics many of us are not interested in reading socially (e.g. crypto 24-7) receive much more prominence... as it's likely the whales and core team are more likely to engage with them.
The same can be easily seen with their pet projects - which only need one or two engagements to effectively be pinned to the top of a hot feed.
@tijn had done a brilliant job with the (now-retired) hot feed that @DeSocialWorld was using, which was much more equitable.
DSW now use @Desofy's hot feed, which, though I believe they have changed the coin-price multipliers, doesn't feel like it gives lower-coin-priced-creators with the same chance that Tijn's did.
I'm investigating Verification by Association (i.e. a community-owned, self-staking reputation, verification approach) as well as different approaches to surfacing equitable and fair discovery for content.
