Love this. You know I'm not all too up on my history, but I'm assuming this is the same Marcus Aurelius that the Gladiator film was (loosely, I guess) based upon? Do you know how accurately? Obviously, in the film he tried to name his general as successor, but his son made sure that didn't happen.

Doesn't the son kill the father in the movie though? @vampirecampfire - Loved this. Julius Caesar is one of my favorite Shakespeare Tales from school and the Gladiator movie one of my favorite movies. This was so vivid in the details and it almost felt like I was watching a movie. :-)

It's been years since I watched it, but yes - I think he kills his father when he discovers that he (the father) is trying to move succession over to the general Maximus.

Aw! I am so happy to hear that Randhir! I did a reply to both you and Phil in a TTDT comment I just made, explaining a little more of the history. ☺️ Thanks for taking the time to read all of it, I appreciate the compliment! 👏🏼🥰

Soooo, I’ve actually never seen the movie! 🤣😂 Shame on me, I know. Perhaps I’ll watch it this evening, actually! But even though I didn’t watch the movie, I do know the history, so hopefully I can shed some light: Originally, Marcus Aurelius had two sons who lived into adulthood- I can’t remember if the brother was older or younger, sorry y’all- and the plan was for them to co-rule together. I say ‘together’, but there was a giant emphasis on that other son to truly run the show there. But the other son died a few years before Marcus passed, so it was all left to Commodus’ idiot ass. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Commodus also had a sister 12 years older than him, named Lucilla. She boldly assumed that the empire would go to her since she was the oldest. Hell yeah girlfriend. 👏🏼💪🏼 Except Rome was a man’s world, sigh. So even then, it STILL somehow got handed to Commodus’ dumb ass!! 😫 His sister tried to get him assistanted, but it ended up backfiring. Cleander’s little bitch ass was a snitch and I’m pretty sure he’s the one who told on her. So, of course, Commodus hurried up and exiled her to the island of Capri, where he very soon after sent someone to kill HER. I totally applaud her efforts though! So happy to hear that y’all enjoyed this!! 🥰 It was my longest tangent yet that I pounded out within about half an hour, so I didn’t expect anyone to read it at all. 😂 Thank you. 💖 I think tonight after work I’ll watch the Gladiator movie and I’ll make a post for y’all on what I think about it. 😇 #TTDT @randhir @sandirose @JDArmstrong @Stargeezer @goldberry @mcmarsh @peaking

In the movie, Commodus does have a sister and she is supposedly Maximus' lover and she helps Maximus escape from Prison and come back to fight Commodus and kill him in a duel.

That’s definitely way more exciting and dramatic than the true wild mess that happened. 😂 In real life Lucilla was married to some rich old senator that was a friend of Marcus, I believe. It was actually another reason she was certain she’d become emperor. She and her husband both lived and breathed politics, so it would’ve made perfect sense for her. She was extremely well connected. Commodus couldn’t give a shit less about any of it. So I can totally see why she’d expect the empire to be hers. #TTDT @randhir @sandirose @JDArmstrong @Stargeezer @goldberry @mcmarsh @peaking

Aw yay! Thanks. ☺️ Happy to hear enjoyed it!! Right!? The irony in all of it. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I think I totally didn’t even mention that Marcus Aurelius was not a fan of gladiator games. He really didn’t see the point in useless bloodshed, and even though actually only 1 in 10 gladiators died in a fight, that 1 in 10 was still too much for him. Of course you couldn’t not hold games at the Colosseum- the entire city would riot against you. 😂 But when he did hold games, Marcus made both gladiators fight with wooden swords, so they could instead “focus on their strengths of their bodies and minds, without the quality of their weaponry as the determining factor”. 😳 I think it goes without saying the Roman’s were not pleased. 😑 And this is yet another reason I question if he’s Commodus’ true father. 💀😂 #TTDT @randhir @sandirose @JDArmstrong @Stargeezer @goldberry @mcmarsh @peaking

Yeah. Seems a bit suss. Although genes are no guarantee of passing on intelligence or character of an individual. If dad was always at war, busy with duties. He maybe was more heavily influenced by Gus dumb friends. Or his real dumb dad. 🤣
