Actress and model Alejandra Guajardo representing El Salvador at the Miss Universe 2022 pageant dared to appear wearing a costume featuring Bitcoin on stage on Wednesday (11/1) evening. Guajardo explained the reason why he wore a costume themed on the currently most popular crypto asset in the world. In posting on her Instagram account, this 27-year-old woman said that her unique clothing appearance shows the history of the currency in El Salvador, which has legalized Bitcoin (BTC) as a means of payment. “This performance represents the history of El Salvador's currency,” said Guajardo. “Before using cacao, then… until it was replaced with US dollars. In 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to use Bitcoin as legal tender. You don't need a sling to walk around dressed as cash." Quoted by Cointelegraph, plastic artist Francisco Guerrero designed Guajardo's costume for his appearance at the Miss Universe pageant. Guerrero features the BTC logo on the obverse, possibly representing the future of the currency in El Salvador. It is unclear whether the government or Bukele may have a role in promoting crypto assets to a global audience through the Miss Universe pageant. Bukele used his Twitter account to report some BTC purchases following El Salvador's adoption of the crypto asset as legal tender in September 2021. While just information, the model costumes at last year's Miss Universe contest were dedicated to calling for justice for women who were murdered in El Salvador. Bukele began mass arresting civilians in 2022 in an effort to combat a wave of state-related crimes. El Salvador's homicide rate has since fallen by 56 percent, according to Bukele's own government figures.
